| Casio to launch W-CDMA phones in Japan
Japan's Casio Computer Co Ltd said it planned to launch W-CDMA cell phones in Japan sometime during the six months from October 2008 to March 2009, reaching out for a wider range of potential customers. Casio now makes CDMA-based phones and supplies them to Japan's KDDI Corp, Verizon Wireless in the United States and South Korea's LG Telecom Ltd, but it said earlier this year it would launch competing W-CDMA handsets. KDDI, Japan's No.2 wireless operator, has CDMA-based networks, while NTT DoCoMo Inc and Softbank Corp, the largest and third-largest, offer cell phone services based on W-CDMA technology. Casio also said on Friday its operating profit came to 13.74 billion yen ($119.6 million) in April-September, down 40.8 percent from a year earlier, as sluggish cell phone sales more than offset brisk digital camera demand.

Pomelo peeling contest a highlight of Yu Neng Pr School's Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations
SINGAPORE: Mooncakes and pomelos are traditional treats at any Mid-Autumn Festival celebration. At Yu Neng Primary School, however, some students and guests had to work for them. The school celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival on 21 September. Performances by CCA coaches on the 'guzheng' and 'erhu' on that day thrilled the students with catchy melodies and modern rhythms. Students were also given opportunities to have a hand in making mooncakes of various shapes and sizes. But the event that enticed the students most was the search for the fastest pomelo peeler. The MP for Marine Parade GRC, Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, was the guest of honour at the celebration. Asked what he thought of the celebration, he said: "I think it is very unique. The other part is, I think, the school has been quite successful to get all the students involved and I am happy to see students of all races coming together to celebrate the diverse cultures in Singapore." London open: Footsie ahead despite Northern Rock
LONDON (SHARECAST) - London's blue chips have rallied slightly in first dealings but it is a real mixed bag. Standard Chartered leads the risers on reports that China's three leading banks have been looking at buying a large stake in the former colonial bank and have sounded out the Singapore state investment agency Temasek over a possible sale of its 17% stake. Housebuilder Barratt is also going well on a resssuring trading statement. It says that interest rate rises and the effect of recent liquidity squeeze on the availability and cost of mortgage finance has led to a tightening of the UK housing market but sales and margins are still OK. Taylor Wimpey is up in sympathy. Northern Rock is the big casualty this morning after it confirmed that the offers it received last Friday were all materially below Fridays closing price.

Powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 processor, the S41 (priced at $1999) comes with 512MB RAM on board, though this can be upgraded to 2GB. Likewise, its 80GB hard drive can be upgraded to twice that capacity. As for appearance, the S41 scores top marks.
