Video camcorders
Video camcorders are clearly evolving at a faster pace than their camera counterparts. This year marked a strong move to high definition video, which now is a popular format for many new models. HDV comes in two sizes, 1080 (full HD) or 720 pixels wide. Either version looks great on your TV, computer or iPod. Here are trends you will see.* Buy the latest models, the improvements can be significant.* Video quality suffers with the hand-size, small camcorders. Some models are cool to use, but there's too much to pack in a small space.* Sound recording is better with more sensitive microphones. There's a move away from MiniDV (tape), but don't count this out if you want to edit video. It's still the easiest way.* Canon, Sony and Panasonic are clear leaders in this field. Stick with these makes.* Just because it says the camcorder shoots still photos doesn't mean it will be easy.ON A BUDGETSony Handycam DCR-HC28, MiniDV, $275The key components on any lower priced camcorder are ease of use and image quality.
Flip Video Camera
" If you're in the market for an ultra-portable, highly affordable camcorder, the Flip Video and slightly improved Flip Video Ultra may be two of the best choices you can make. I was highly skeptical about the Flip even after reading rave reviews in places like the Wall Street Journal and Forbes. You can't possibly shoot decent looking video for under $150; at least that's what I thought. At just thicker than an iPod, the Flip easily fits in your pocket meaning you have no excuse to not take it with you.The $120-$150 price makes it not the end of the world if you ever drop or lose your Flip. And for that price, the Flip shoots video I'd put up against any of the DVD camcorders on the market and some of the low-end MiniDV camcorders.I'm not about to replace my Canon HV20 (or a Canon GL2) with the Flip, but for many situations, it's the perfect camcorder for catching impromptu moments."I'm a big believer in that the best camera is the one you always have with you.
Canon XH G1 HD Video Camcorder Supports HDTV Test in Outer Space
A Canon XH G1 HD video camcorder traveled into space for use in testing involving the capture of digital high-definition television (HDTV) images on the latest space shuttle mission. The XH GI was carried on the space shuttle Discovery, which was launched on October 23 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 11:38 am EDT, and used in HDTV testing jointly carried out on the International Space Station by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The XH G1 HD camcorder, introduced in November 2006, is equipped with a Genuine Canon 20x HD zoom lens incorporating a fluorite lens element to ensure outstanding resolution, contrast and color reproduction. The compact, lightweight XH G1 combines exceptional mobility with stunning high-resolution 1080i HD video and delivers the same high-performance capabilities as the XL H1, which has garnered high acclaim in the broadcast and video-production industries since its release in November 2005.
Sony swings to profit on electronics
Sony Corp swung to a quarterly operating profit as it booked strong sales of liquid crystal display TVs and digital cameras and benefited from a weaker yen, and it slightly raised its full-year forecast. The profit jump also reflected the absence of hefty costs booked in the same quarter last year to recall faulty PC batteries. Sony, which competes with Canon Inc in digital cameras and with Samsung Electronics Co Ltd in flat TVs, has enjoyed strong demand for its Cyber-shot digital cameras, Handycam camcorders, Vaio PCs and Bravia LCD TVs. But its PlayStation 3 (PS3) videogame console continued to lag Nintendo Co Ltd's hot-selling Wii, and the game division fell deep into the red as it was forced to sell the PS3 at a loss.
