| (AFX UK Focus) 2007-11-21 22:59 GMT: Japan's Canon to sell advanced 40nm semiconductor steppers - report
TOKYO (Thomson Financial) - Japan's largest digital camera maker Canon Inc plans to begin selling cutting-edge 40-nanometre steppers, key equipment in semiconductor production, before the end of this month, the Nikkei reported on Thursday without citing sources. Its state-of-the-art steppers employ proprietary immersion technology that places a thin film of ultra-pure water between the silicon wafer and the stepper's projection lens to enhance resolution, the business daily said. The company is aiming for a market share of 30 percent in 2010, it said. At present, Dutch competitor ASML holds 70 percent of the market, while Nikon holds a share just shy of 30 percent. A single state-of-the-art stepper costs more than 4 billion yen, the report said.
